What do you do when your dialogue partner doesn't want to go deep but just stay up on the surface of substantive conversations? After you've done what you can to take the conversation deeper, you may have to respect the position of the person you're engaging, remain friendly and stay kind, but it's okay to move on to someone else who might be more interested in a deeper dialogue. There are reasons why some people don't want to have deep conversations. Sometimes people don't want to admit to differences and simply focus on similarities in the name of getting along better. It's okay to push back on that narrative a bit and see if you can examine honest differences.
